Introduction

La Trace was a web app aimed at long-distance cyclists, for those who love nature, slow travel and exploring the local area.

After conducting a few user interviews, we decided to turn the web app into a mobile app in order to support people on their journey.

I was responsible for designing the app’s navigation and the route detail pages.

Challenges

  • How might we improve the mobile app experience?

  • How might we make the app truly useful for cycle tourists?

  • How might we ensure we don’t introduce any friction into the experience?

Cycling trips can be a stressful experience, especially the first few times. Imagine being out on your bike without knowing where you’ll be sleeping that night. Suddenly, it starts to rain.

You open the app, desperate to find accommodation that allows bikes as quickly as possible.

We have conducted numerous interviews with all kinds of cycle tourists

By gathering feedback from users, we realised that the hardest part is bringing together all the resources needed for a successful cycling trip in a way that is easy to take in, and well-organised enough to be useful both before and during the trip.

We presented our analysis of the user interviews in order to steer the design of the mobile app in the right direction

Design Specification

When one or more features were ready to be delivered to the development team, I worked on high-fidelity designs and specifications for the engineers. Detailed components were created in Figma, and I worked closely with my front-end engineer, and we did a lot of QA during delivery.

Conclusion

As a result, we released the first version of the app, updating the navigation and drawing on tried-and-tested iOS standards and patterns.

Our reward has been over 10,000 downloads since launch, as well as the satisfaction of having helped people plan their cycling trips as easily as possible.

Learnings

There’s a lot to consider when you want to personalise someone’s cycling holiday experience, especially as cycling holidays can be an unpredictable and spontaneous affair.

There are plenty of opportunities that are often overlooked, such as those that arise during the trip itself.

Looking back on the experience, I would have suggested a feature that would allow users to create a personalised photo album of their trip. It’s a great way to relive the experience once the trip is over.
